The analysis of the semantic function within the half-lines of the Poetic Edda reveals a formulaic system in this type of poetry.

A formulaic system is employed by a poet and is made up of semantic strings which are groups of grammatical units employed under metrical conditions. An analysis of the Volsunga saga and the Volsung Cycle (i.e. poetic versions in the Poetic Edda) shows that the narrative and mythical patterning found in the saga are consistent with a general patterning found in other epics and lend further credence to the possibility that the poetry may indeed come from an earlier oral antecedent.

In short, this work concludes that the poetic work in Codex Regius 2365, 4[degrees] represents a written dedication of oral works- the oral works were mutable to circumstances of the occasion, whereas the text is not. The manuscript is a fixed text, though it is subject to manipulation by a scribe.

Any discussion of orality vis-a-vis written text is a discussion of the oral voice in the text, that is the extent to which the written text imitates the traditional narrative.
